The METRO HS Forensic Science class has had a busy couple of weeks exploring the world of death and decomposition as they learned about the organization of life, structure, and function of living organisms, conducting an investigation, patterns, cause and effect, and entomology. Students spent last week following the clinical autopsy procedure investigating the suspicious deaths of their “cadavers” to determine the cause, mechanism, and manner of death. This week students collected samples and drew conclusions on the time since death for the chicken corpses in METRO’s own simulated body farm. This research method allows scientists to observe and quantify the process of death through insect observation and physical circumstances to determine the TSD (time since death) of a victim. The METRO Forensic Science class is offered to students as an alternative experience to the first semester of Biology and targets those Biology standards through the lens of Forensic Science.
