An annual partnership between METRO STEAM Academy and NewBo Market provided students with a fun way to apply math, construction, and creativity skills to produce a public display at the market. This year the market challenged the kids to create a model of their building’s planned renovation, adding a 2nd floor to the north end of the market.

This challenge began with consultation from the project’s architects, Studio Combine. The model was a 1/2 inch:1 foot replica of the market, cracked in half with the north roof exposed to allow visitors to see inside the newly renovated space. An acrylic cutaway allowed visitors to see into the first floor from above. This project engaged 35+ Metro High School students, 5 METRO teachers, and used a lot of sugar!!
